I hope this doesn't set a precedent for doing this on everybody's 30th birthday, or I'm going to be busy writing these for the next few years...

Top Ten Reasons Denise Sawicki is Awesome

10) She wore red on her wedding day, and she looked good.

9) She doesn't just send the DVD as a surprise birthday gift. She sends the book they based the movie on.

8) She dressed as a lumberjack last Halloween, beard and all. (link)

7) False modesty? Not a problem.

6) She did volunteer work at a suicide prevention hotline. Some people might be alive today because of her.

5) Time and again, she has proven trustworthy for her wisdom and discretion when sought for confidential advice. (I do not mean how to get my Sims to stop peeing themselves.)

4) She discovered a new atomic particle. ...Well, almost.

3) Some people are content just to make a fan page for their favorite musician. She married him.

2) Four words: Lazy line painter Jane.

1) She has more friends who love her than she knows.

R.I.P. Pat

Kelly's mother passed away last week. The event had been anticipated for decades: Pat was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a child, suffered kidney failure in 1995 and survived on her brother's donated kidney, and had five strokes and five heart attacks and countless operations, including emergency brain surgery in 2007 that changed her personality. She obviously possessed quite an inner resiliency even if she seemed petite and frail on the outside, but it was inevitable that she would someday lose the fight with her own body. Go »

Someone asked me for help learning HTML today. I turned to my trusted traditional source, the good old primer at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, but alas, it has finally been removed after all these years. This was one of the major how-to guides in the early years of the web, and it's the very guide that I used to teach myself HTML one weekend in 1996, from which this very site you're reading has since evolved. White Christmas

We're enjoying our winter vacation in central Illinois so far. Tue 12/22 - When you're hitting the road for your vacation right after work is over, every extra minute feels like an hour, which means I did 45 hours of overtime.
