Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”
I can see why this comedy has gradually become an popular institution, especially in Christmas reruns: It's effortlessly likeable, picking the best moments from a dozen romantic comedies and combining them all into an anthology with something for everyone. There's so much tonal variation between the stories that they sometimes clash, but with a cast this clever and appealing, with at least a half-dozen stars who bring a smile just by appearing on screen, who can complain? If a particular scene doesn't work (Andrew Lincoln's stalker, Hugh Grant's private dancer), the next three scenes will. As a fat person, I found the movie's obsession with weight a little strange (three of the stories involve characters ridiculed for being fat), but it's a minor quirk in what is mostly a very delightful comedy.
