Matthew Preston: “It sucked.”

I really wanted to like this movie, but it was just too much. I constantly felt like there were inside jokes or other information that was missing. The casting was good and I am happy to see David Harbour doing more, but it just wasn't enough. Ill-timed humor and scenes of graphic violence took away from the narrative flow.

Scott Hardie: The film franchises Hellboy and Men in Black both seem owned by corporate entities that have no idea how to use them. Successfully mixing humor and big sci-fi action scenes is hard enough as it is, but the studios don't seem to understand what audiences want from these films, and keep serving up something else instead. Nobody but the most maladjusted of fanboys wants graphic violence in a Hellboy movie, especially showstopping gore that halts the momentum. Then there's the fondness that audiences have for Ron Perlman and Guillermo del Toro; nobody out there demanded David Harbour and the director of Doomsday instead. I haven't seen this, but it sure sounds like a waste of time, money, and effort from all involved. − July 31, 2019 • more by Scott
