Evie Totty: “It ruled.”
What can I say? Denzel Washington.
Though I don't have to say more I will. :)
The movie is not what is expected from the trailers I think. The trailers make you think it is some sort of action/thriller. It turns out to be about the journey of an addict. Washington's character can't seem to get clean even though his life literally depends upon it. He even goes to the hearing about the crash drunk. Thing is...
... he almost gets away with it. And by now it's not about the crash. It has been ascertained that he was not at fault. BUT it IS a Federal crime to fly under the influence - which he was.
What happened though was that the girl he'd been sleeping with died in the crash and all he had to do was say she was the one that drank the vodka. See, they found two empty vodka bottles in the trash and they'd suspended drink sales during the turbulence...
But he couldn't bring himself to do it. So he confessed to the whole thing. And went to prison for it. I liked that. I liked that he didn't get away with it. Most films have the anti-hero where you root for them to 'get away with it'. And although I'm sure the audience wouldn't have minded if he had - I'm happy he didn't. I'm happy they had the final scene of him in prison talking about what he'd been through. This review contains spoilers. Reveal it.

Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”
Great drama, 90% about addiction and 10% about aviation (rather than the 70% aviation/30% addiction mix that the trailer made it seem like). Denzel Washington is amazing, and I barely recognized him in some scenes, so much does he change his usual mannerisms at times. The scene where he hits rock bottom depicts some frightening moral compromises. The movie is a little implausible in parts, but I do buy the ending, and like it. If I have any big complaint about the movie, it's the way too on-the-nose song choices, which spell out the themes in annoyingly obvious ways.
